Raja vows to foil 'Sharif Courts' conspiracy against democracy

LAHORE - Senior Punjab Minister Raja Riaz on Wednesday accused Chief Justice of Lahore High Court Justice Khawaja Muhammad Sahrif of meddling in political matters, and asked him to explain if he was a spokesperson to the PML-N. The PPP leader remarked this at a news conference here at Lahore Press Club in the context of Justice Khawaja Muhammad Sharifs statement the other day in which he had counselled PPP to quit Punjab coalition if it had objection to the appointment of Prosecutor General Punjab Rana Maqbool. The chief justice should tell if he was spokesperson to the PML-N? Has he started taking part in politics? Is there any provision in the Constitution that chief justice of a high court could counsel a political party and represent a proclaimed offender, Raja unfurled a volley of questions on Justice Sharif during his news press conference accompanied by his fellow minister Farooq Yousuf Ghurki. Accusing him of overstepping his authority, Raja asked the chief justice if he was desirous of doing politics, he should first resign from his office and then take part in coming local bodies elections. PPP, he added, would field a candidate against him. Those talking of 'Dogar Courts are now talking of establishing 'Sharif Courts, he observed, adding the chief justice should shun the 'attitude of judicial dictatorship. It were the military dictators first who pushed PPP to the wall, and now it is being subjected to 'judicial accountability, he averred, adding it was now 'Sharif Courts turn to hold PPP accountable. He, however, said PPP would foil all conspiracies against democracy by the 'Sharif Courts. He also asked the media persons present there to tell if PPP was not a victim to judicial accountability at the moment. The minister said people had brought PPP to power and the government would complete its tenure. Raja also appealed to Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry to take notice of Justice Khawaja Sharifs political statement. The 108 MPAs of PPP in Punjab Assembly seek justice from Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry to dispel the impression of 'Sharif Courts. Asked if he would file a reference against Justice Sharif in the Supreme Judicial Council, Raja replied in the affirmative, saying he would do so very soon. To another question, he said PPP was not setting the stage for any confrontation but the LHC chief justice was certainly doing so. He alleged Justice Sharif was conspiring against democracy. To a question that Nawaz Sharif has accused PPP of brow beating the judiciary, Riaz said it was ironic that a person who was involved in attack on the Supreme Court and served under a dictator as finance minister was giving lessons of democracy to his party whose two prime ministers sacrificed their lives for democracy. Since Nawaz Sharif has now got permission to become PM for the third term, he was now fast heading to pave way for mid-term polls, he said, while predicting that in the next one-and-half month period, the PML-N would openly demand mid-term elections.
