LAHORE - A former parliamentarian Liaqat Abbas Bhatti, who is accused of torturing and confining a 13-year-old house maid and his younger brother at his residence, was released following the bail granted by a judicial magistrate here on Saturday.
Maid Shahida and her brother were freed by the police after they were found confined at the residence of a former MNA in Johar Town on Friday. Police had arrested the ex-MNA who was presented before the Judicial Magistrate Hafeezur-Rehman on Saturday. The media were barred from entering the court on the request of the lawyers. The magistrate, at first, ordered to send the accused on a 14-day remand. However, the lawyer of accused requested the court the offense made by the accused was bail-able due to which a bail plea should also be considered at the same time. At this, the court accepted the plea and ordered the police to release the accused after submitting surety bond of Rs50, 000.
A police team Friday had conducted a raid at the residence of Liaqat Abbas Bhatti and found 13-year-old Shahida chained in the servant quarter on the second floor of the residence. Her arms and feet were tied with chains. The wife of the former MNA opened the chains on the orders of the police.
Her brother was also recovered from another room when she informed the police about his illegal detention too. The girl told the police her father had taken a loan from the ex-MNA and when he was unable to return it, the ex-MNA confined her at his residence.
