LAHORE - Mohammad Asif is likely to get away with a fine for his 19-day ordeal in Dubai last year as the PCB constituted inquiry committee, probing into the case, is not pressing for any serious penalties against the disgraced pacer for possession of opium. The three-member committee would be submitting its recommendations to the PCB Chairman Ijaz Butt few days after the conclusion of the second test against Sri Lanka and if the reports were to be believed the committee is likely to recommend just a fine on Asif. "We were supposed to wind up our inquiry by end of this month but due to unavailability of some documents the hearing has been delayed a bit. But we intend to finalise our recommendations and submit by next month," a member in the inquiry committee said. He said Asif had been asked to provide some documents which were delayed. The PCB formed the committee to probe his detention in Dubai in June on his way back from India after playing in the IPL. Although the authorities found 0.24 grams of opium in his possession, the Dubai prosecutor did not press any charges against him and was later deported home. Reports said since the IPL drugs inquiry tribunal had already banned Asif for one year from September 2008 for failing a dope test during the first edition of the Twenty20 event, senior PCB officials believed that the punishment was enough for him. "Look he has already been under suspension since July 15 by the board as well, so by September this year he would serve more than one year's suspension," one official said. Asif had already claimed that he didn't know the substance which was in his possession was opium, instead he was of the view that it was a herbal medicine prescribed by a local Hakeem.
