PTI lands in trouble over intra-party polls

LAHORE - The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), which has scheduled its phase-wise intra-party polls from September 15, has landed into trouble over the election procedure because it has so far only planned union council ballot, sources said on Saturday.
In the first phase, the PTI will hold the intra-party polls at the union-council level to be followed by tehsil, district, regional, provincial and central levels.
The sources said the party core group, representing all the provinces, devised a strategy to holding UC level polls only. No decision was made on remaining stages of the elections after differences erupted among the party leaders over the UC-level poll process, they maintained.
The sources claimed that the intra-party polls would be held on ‘popular-1 formula’, which means that the winning candidate would be elected as US president and the contender would become its general secretary.
They said following this formula, another 10 office-bearers in a union council would be elected and the elects would nominate secretaries of five wings to complete the 17- member UC body.
The sources added that 12 elected office-bearers will comprise nine male and three female members, while the five wings the elected office-bearers would nominate the representatives of wings of youth, labour, lawyers’, traders’ and sports and culture. They maintained some leaders belonging to the newcomers’ lot desired to hold the next phases launching their panels of candidates instead of following the UC formula to get maximum strength in the party, while the old guard wanted ‘popular-1 formula’ to be followed.
The sources said the founding or old members of the PTI think that they could secure some position in the party only through this formula. About the remaining stages of intra-party polls, they added a meeting of the core group was likely to be held on 4th.
