LAHORE - The Estate Management Directorate of Lahore Development Authority has finalised all arrangements for launching anti-encroachment operation in Sabzazar Housing Scheme from today (Tuesday). LDA had already served notices to encroachers with the directions to demolish illegal structures within two days to avoid anti-encroachment operation. The operation to be commenced from today is aimed at removing hurdles in the smooth flow of traffic as well as clearing off walkways and service roads for pedestrians. Shopkeepers in the area had illegally extended their shops on service roads by constructing various structures, building overhead shades beyond the approved building plans of their shops, erecting huge publicity boards and creating other nuisance for general public. The operation will be carried on as a continuous campaign. Meanwhile, LDA removed encroachments from Shadman Market on Monday. The Punjab government has declared the locality as a Model Area. The LDA staff removed encroachments and other impediment from the corridors and cleared these pavements for facilitating the customers. On the other hand, special drive of the Town Planning Wing of LDA is going on against private housing schemes that had been launched without fulfilling legal requirements. All signboards of such housing schemes, placed at different points along Raiwind Road were removed on Monday. The staff of the Town Planning Directorate of LDA also demolished the site office of a housing scheme namely Munawar Town that was being set up in the area earmarked by the LDA for two new residential schemes in the city. The Metropolitan Planning Wing of LDA has already notified a list of 116 those private housing schemes that had been launched without getting approval from the competent authority as well as fulfilling other requirements. People had been advised in their own interest to avoid entering into any sale and purchase of plots in these housing schemes. Consultative workshop discusses water management Consultative workshop on United Nation (UN) joint programme 'Environment' discussed safe water and sanitation, natural resources management, sustainable urbanisation, green industry, waste management, energy and green jobs issues with the aim to improve the capacity of stakeholders and to sensitise the society about these important issues. Environment Protection Department (EPD) and the UN jointly organised the workshop here at a local hotel on Monday. The workshop proposed environment related projects under the UN Programme in Pakistan. The recommendations of the different experts in the workshop would be send later to the donors. The experts gave their suggestions regarding support policy, legislative, and regulatory frameworks to strengthen incentives for environmentally sustainable development. They submitted different suggestions about biodiversity, conservation, land degradation and desertification pests and invasive species management, climate change adaptation and integrated water resources management. They also suggested many ways about urban planning system, improving the living and environmental conditions in urban dwellings and to promote sustainable transport. Development of clean production mechanisms, promotion of carbon financing and clean development mechanisms, resources use efficiency, renewable energy and energy conservation would be part of this area. Some 18 UN entities are operational in Pakistan, with different mandates, different sets of global priorities, and different operational managerial and delivery system. The vision of the UN Country Team (UNCT) is to deliver as one by overcoming systemic fragmentation in supporting human development, especially in delivering humanitarian assistance where necessary.
