LAHORE - Hundreds of jewellers took to the streets on Monday to protest against the lawmen’s failure to rein in robbers.
The Jewellers’ Association led the rally from Rang Mahal Chowk to Gujjar Gali. The protesters were carrying placards and banners inscribed with slogans against police and the government for leaving them at the mercy of robbers. They said the bandits have been on rampage but police have dragging their feet over the issue.
“We are left with no other choice except to pack up and shut the business. The deadly armed robberies have become order of the day in Lahore while the police are helpless to provide protection to the lives and property of the citizens” says Asif, one of the protesters, who was also robbed in the city the other day. The protesters also condemned the provincial government for the worsening law and order situation in Lahore. They said that the police have failed to nick gangsters.
During the last week, armed bandits hit two main jewellery shops in different parts of the provincial metropolis and snatched away gold ornaments worth millions of rupees. The police are probing with no arrest made yet. Meanwhile, the Karachi Jeweler Associations also warned the authorities to stop the victimisation of jewelers as number of businessmen had been kidnapped and many of them received extortion slips and some of them were killed when they refused to pay the extortion money.
