Nerds of Art and Gurus of Science at GCU


LAHORE - A three-day mega event ‘Nerds of Art and Gurus of Science (NAGS 2013)’, began at the Government College University (GCU) on Wednesday.
About 350 students from 31 educational intuitions of Pakistan are participating in the 27 competitions being organised by the GCU Photography Club in a candid coordination with different student societies and academic departments of the university.
The event includes creative and innovative competitions like Speed Wiring, Best Idea Workshop, Photo Essay, Photography, Short Filmmaking, Drama, Mimes, Standup Comedy, E-gamming, Article Writing, Poetry, Sketching, Case Study, Logo Designing, Web Designing, Poster Designing, Comics, Spelling Bee, Circuit Designing, Short Story, Calligraphy, Speed Programming and Declamation. Singing competitions including Best Music Video Making and Band Quest Quartet are also part of the mega event.
Talking about NAGS ’13, Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Khaleeq-ur-Rahman said co-curricular activities were a crucial part of formal training and personality development of students at GCU.  He said that the objective behind NAGS was to also involve students of the other educational institutions in this training process.
He also said that science and arts were equally important for human development, saying that both the genres if joined together, could make exceptional changes.
GCU Photography Club Advisor Azhar Ifthikar said that NAGS would bring together students of arts and science from all across Pakistan and provide them a platform where they could discuss and share innovative ideas, knowledge and reveal their creativity. 
He said that students from rural areas also signed up for the event and were taking part in all the activities, adding that these students had immense talent.
SCHOLARS: The Government College University Lahore Abdus Salam School of Mathematical Sciences has produced four Doctors of Philosophy in the field of Mathematics. GCU scholar Ayesha Shabbir completed her thesis on “Two-Dimensional Lattice Graphs With Gallai’s Property” under the supervision of foreign mathematician Prof. Dr. Tudor Zamfirescu while Saima Kanwal, Ayesha Riasat and Sana Javed did research on “Extremal Graphs with Respect to Degree Distance Index”, “Metric Dimension and Distances in Graphs”, and “Contributions to Chromaticity of Graphs and Hypergraphs” respectively under the supervision of foreign mathematician Prof. Dr. Loan Tomescu.
Punjab University has awarded 04 PhD degrees to the scholars in which Sheer Muhammad Serawat S/o Islam ud Din in the subject of Zoology after approval of his thesis entitled “Biodiversity and Functional Role of Spiders (Araneae) in Wheat Agro-Ecosystem of Punjab, Pakistan”, Asma Afzal Shami D/o Mirza Muhammad Afzal in the subject of Pakistan Studies after approval of her thesis entitled “Political Empowerment of Women’’, Saman Saif D/o Naeem Hussain Chattha in the subject of English after approval of her thesis entitled “Time and Metaphysics in the Fiction of Qurat-Ul-Ain Hyder” and Abdul Majid S/o Muhammad Ibrahim in the subject of South Asian Studies after approval of his thesis entitled “Performance of SAARC as a Regional Organization in Comparison with ASEAN and ECO”.
Exams: Punjab University’s annual BA/B.Sc examinations 2013 will start on Thursday (today) April 04, 2013. As many as 134,433 candidates are appearing in the examination out of which 43,479 are male and 90,954 are female. As many as 401 centres have been established out of which 125 centres are of male, 257 centres are of female, 15 are combined and 4 centres have been set up at jails.
Results: PU Examinations Department has declared the results of B.Ed (Bachelor of Education) 2nd Annual Examination 2011 & 1st Annual Examination 2012 and MSc Home Economics Part-I Annual Examination 2012. Detailed results are also available at PU website www.pu.edu.pk.
Visit: Turkish Ambassador Mustafa Babur Hizlan called on Punjab University Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran at his office here. The meeting discussed various issues of mutual interest. Later, PU VC presented a souvenir to the guest.
