Jamaat demands EC to comply with SC orders

LAHORE - Jamaat e Islami (JI) Acting Ameer Muhammad Aslam Saleemi has called upon the Election Commission (EC) to obey the Supreme Court in delimitation and preparation of voters’ lists in Karachi.
In a press statement here on Sunday, he said that all the political parties except the MQM had serious objections over the delimitation of constituencies as well as the electoral lists of Karachi.
He believed that Karachi delimitation and the voters’ lists had been prepared under the pressure of an ethnic group which alone could benefit from these. He said the SC had taken notice of the political parties’ protest and ordered fresh delimitation of constituencies and verification of the voters’ lists under the supervision of the armed forces.
However, the EC termed the fresh delimitation of constituencies as impractical while the verification of the voters’ lists under the supervision of army had also not been accomplished properly.
While Aslam Saleemi said the SC had also held that fresh delimitations could be made without fresh census. It appeared that the EC was not willing to comply with the apex court order although it was its constitutional duty to hold transparent elections, he added.
Meanwhile, the JI welcomed the decision of all the opposition parties besides the democratic and social organizations at Karachi for holding train march for fresh delimitation in Karachi for the restoration of peace and in line with the SC orders.
JI Secretary General Liaqat Baloch said Karachi was mini Pakistan as well as an economic hub. This civilized city had been defamed because of the extortions, target killings, abductions for ransom and other MQM crimes, he said. He said that the elections in Karachi were nothing but a trap of the MQM to secure bogus mandate on gun point. Baloch said that the democratic forces, the civil society and the trading community in the port city had now awakened and they were determined to root out the terrorists and extortionists from Karachi.
CJAH proposed Nasir Aslam as caretaker PM: The Central Jamiat Ahle Hadith (CJAH) has proposed the name of Justice (r) Nasir Aslam Zahid for caretaker prime minister.
