Rawalpindi stadium gearing up for India series

LAHORE - Pakistani cricket officials are racing against time to prepare the Rawalpindi cricket stadium in time to host the second Test against India in January next year. However, there are doubts whether the venue would be ready in time for the January 21-25 Test as its outfield is in a very poor shape while the spectator stands and other facilities are also far from ready. An official of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said there is a chance that the second Test of the home series against India could be moved either to Faisalabad or Multan. India is scheduled to arrive in Pakistan early in January to play three Tests, five one-day internationals and a Twenty20 International. It is an eagerly-awaited series for Pakistan, which has not played a Test since the final Test of its away series against India last December. The PCB has earmarked Rs.800 million for renovation and upgrading of venues for the home series against India. While the work at other venues is going smoothly, the Rawalpindi stadium is posing a major headache for the Board. A senior PCB official visited the venue over the weekend and summoned the contractors, asking them to step up the renovation work there. Salim Altaf, the PCB Director General, is confident that the venue would be perfectly ready to host the second Test against India. "We are confident the Rawalpindi stadium will be ready within a month," said Altaf, a former Pakistan Test pacer.
