LAHORE - Police on Tuesday claimed to have shot dead the killers of their colleague in a shootout at Shadbagh.
Two hitmen had killed a cop outside the sessions courts near Islampura a few days ago. A police officer revealed that both the alleged robbers had been arrested four days ago and the CIA police kept them at a private cell, where they were interrogated in connection with the murder of the policeman.
The police claimed on Tuesday that both the robbers, identified as Ismail alias Shani and Nasir, alias Nasri were killed during an armed encounter, which took place in the Shadbagh police area. Shani was captured alive from the crime scene on Friday as local TV channels showed policemen bundling him into a van while his accomplice Nasir, alias Nasri, was arrested later, on the same day.
According to police, the shootout erupted as the police raided to arrest Nasir on the information provided by Shani.
Interestingly, no policemen wounded in the crossfire which, according to the police, continued for a considerable time in the densely populated area. When the fire was stopped, police said, both the bandits were found shot dead.
A Central Investigation Agency (CIA) constable was killed while a head-constable sustained multiple injuries when two suspected robbers opened fire at them outside the sessions courts on Friday. The team of Iqbal Town CIA police was present outside the place to monitor the movement of an alleged criminal Shani.
As he came out from the court premises after hearing in connection with a murder case, the bandits opened fire on the policdemen when they tried to overpower him. The gunfire left constable Sajid Ali dead on the spot while head-constable Anwar is being treated for his injuries at a hospital. The police have removed the bodies to the morgue. Further investigation is underway.
