LAHORE - Majority of Elite Force, set up on November 5, 1997 on the pattern of the United States Rapid Response Force (RRF) to act as counter-terrorism force, has been deployed to protect three influential political families, The Nation has learnt. These families include Gillanis, Sharifs and Chaudhrys which are in power corridors in one-way or the other since long. One of these families, the Chaudhrys, is a legacy of the Musharraf government, which is still enjoying patronage by the government and its functionaries. As per details, total strength of the force is 945 and out of these, at least 685 personnel have been deployed with the Gillani, Sharif and the Chaudhry families, leaving behind only 260 for the public duty. But, out of this 260 Elite Force jawans, only 105 are safeguarding the lives and properties of nine million people, the total population of the provincial capital. As per data 155 personnel are performing duties at the Elite Police Force Training Schools. Sources told The Nation that the Force owns 67 vehicles, out of which, 20 are deployed with the Sharifs, eight with Gilanis and five with the Chaudhrys while 10 vehicles are off the road and four are deployed with other VIPs. Almost five Elite Force personnel have been deployed at the gates of the Elite Training School in Bedian, 24 in other districts with prominent political figures, 28 are instructors, 46 are on special duty at the CPO and 23 are with the forces AIG. Not less than 71 personnel are put on guard with the Prime Ministers family members, including 20 with his spouse Fauzia Gilani, seven with him (PM), 28 with his sons Abdul Qadir, Haider and Moosa, six with Qasim Gilani and 10 with his daughter, Fiza Gilani. Almost 41 personnel have been deployed with Governor Punjab Salman Taseer, 33 on American Consulate, 13 with Dosti Bus, five with Shah Zain Bugti, 13 with IGP Tariq Saleem Dogar, 15 with the Chief Justice of the Lahore High Court Khawaja Muhammad Sharif, nine with Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhrys family, 16 at the Central Police Office (CPO), 10 with Punjab Senior Minister Raja Riaz Ahmed, 13 with Dost Muhammad Khosa and 10 with advisor to the CM, Zulfiqar Ahmed Khosa. As per data, at least 59 personnel are deployed with the Chaudhrys of Gujrat. Out of 59 personnel, 22 with Chief of PML-Q and former premier Chaudhry Shujaat, eight with his son Shafey Hussain, 22 with Ex-CM Punjab Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi and seven with his son Moonis Elahi. Not less than 248 Elite Force Personnel are guarding the Sharifs, including 71 with CM Punjab Shahbaz Sharif, 55 with Mian Nawaz Sharif, 58 at Raiwind, 24 with Hamza Shahbaz, six with Nawaz Sharifs son-in-law MNA Captain (retd) Safdar Mehmood, seven with Shahbaz Sharifs son Salman Shahbaz, nine with Imran Yousaf (nephew), 10 with Shahbaz Sharifs spouse and eight at her Gulburg residence. Sources also added that CM Punjab Shahbaz Sharif has withdrawn his personal security protocol and travelling in his personal vehicle these days. It is worth mentioning that due to 'insufficient security measures, the government had also created a new division some months back, comprising a DIG, three SPs, 12 DSPs and over 1,000 officials in order to save public representatives like the president, the prime minister and the governor. The Elite Force was established in 1997-1998 by Mian Shahbaz Sharif during his first tenure as chief minister to eliminate the crime but, according to PML-N leaders, the previous government of Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi damaged the force by appointing its personnel for the security of high-profile people.
