Punjab to set up special protection unit

LAHORE - Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif on Tuesday directed the authorities concerned to beef up security arrangements for maintaining law and order in the province.
He said that special attention should be paid to ensure security of sensitive buildings and places. He directed police to spare no effort for ensuring protection of the people. He said that strict monitoring of entry and exit points of the city should be ensured while a vigilant eye must be kept on suspects. He warned the office of strict action if any negligence is shown towards security measures.
The CM said this while presiding over a meeting held here to review overall law and order situation in the province. Provincial Minister Col (R) Shuja Khanzada, Special Assistant Rana Maqbool Ahmad, the Chief Secretary, Inspector General Police, Secretary Home and other officers concerned were present. The meeting decided to set up a special protection unit comprising 2,000 police personnel.
Addressing the meeting, the CM said that protection of life and property of citizens is the prime responsibility of police which should perform its duties regarding maintenance of law and order in an efficient manner. He said that security arrangements should be further improved.
He said that he would personally preside over meetings twice a week to review law and order situation. He said that all out resources would be provided for maintaining peace and law and order while the agencies concerned would have to ensure their proper utilisation.
Shahbaz said that an effective digital monitoring system is being evolved for improving law and order.
He said that the process of setting up anti-terrorism force is in progress and locations have been selected for regional offices of anti-terrorism department.
He directed the cabinet committee to undertake visits for reviewing security arrangements at entry and exit points in far-flung areas of the province. The meeting decided that modern training will be arranged for the police officials appointed in special protection unit. 
The CM took strict notice of aerial firing in the bye-election in Jhang and directed Inspector General Police to arrest the culprits.
He also issued instructions for the suspension of DSP and SHO concerned, and warned that no incident of aerial firing will be tolerated in the province. He said that besides police, administration should also take effective legal action against the elements involved in aerial firing.
