LAHORE - The Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) has been divided over the issue of judges’ appointments on ad-hoc basis in the Supreme Court.
To resolve the issue before the meeting of Judicial Commission scheduled for May 07 (Monday), the PBC has called the meeting for Saturday (today) to discuss the issue of judges’ appointments.
Some PBC members announced that they would oppose the appointments of additional and ad-hoc judges. While, Supreme Court Bar Association Secretary Muhammad Aslam Zar said that the apex court, when it needs, had powers according to the constitution to appoint judges on ad-hoc or additional basis.
Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry had announced the appointment of two judges and one additional judge on ad hoc basis to complete nine member bench for the hearing of, possible appeal of Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani, in the contempt of court case, but PBC disapproved the move of chief justice and asked to convene a meeting to hold debate over the issue.
The representatives from all the four provinces would participate in the meeting convened by the PBC and it is also expected that members will pass resolution against the appointment of judges on ad hoc basis.
