Hearing of plea against Pervez Ashraf adjourned

LAHORE - Justice Umar Atta Bandial of Lahore High Court (LHC) on Monday adjourned till April 7 hearing of a petition against loadshedding and removal of Federal Minister for Water & Power Raja Pervez Ashraf on his alleged failure in fulfilling promises to overcome electricity crisis. The petition was filed by Imtiaz Rasheed Qureshi through his counsel Barrister Farooq Hassan stating that the minister had been continuously lying and misleading the people of Pakistan about the worst misery to befall this poverty ridden and deprived nations of 180 million people about loadshedding. The counsel said the minister had been categorically affirming that the power crisis would end by Dec 31, 2009, but miserably failed in honouring his promise. He pointed out the minister through a written reply into an earlier petition in the LHC also reiterated this promise. He said the minister proved himself as a dishonest man so suffered disqualification for becoming member assembly under the constitution. The petitioner, therefore, prayed to the court that the respondent minister be held guilty of contempt of court on the basis of information laid before this court asked to vacate his present responsibilities since he was in the same office when this matter was last challenged in the court. Petitioner further prayed that the current loadshedding system be declared as bad in law as determined by secretary ministry of power and instead the supply of power be supplied to all peoples equally. It was also prayed that the court may appoint a judicial commission for determining the subject matter within four weeks of the creation of such a commission. Ayeshas counsel to move court against Shoaib A Lahore based lawyer have claimed being hired by Ayesha Siddiqui for availing of legal remedies against Shoaib Malik in Pakistani courts. Addressing a press conference on Monday at the Lahore High Court (LHC) premises, Barrister Farooq Hassan claimed that although he had not got power of attorney from Ayesha but telephonically she had conveyed him that she wanted to hire him for legal action against Shoaib. He said she was weeping while talking with him. Farooq said although in India there was no need to get permission from the wife for second marriage but in Pakistan he would get Shoaib penalised under Hudood laws and hopefully would get him punished for life term. He said if needed, Ayesha also would reach Pakistan for appearing before the court of law against Shoaib. Commission appointed The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Monday appointed a local commission to record statements of witnesses in an election petition against PML-Q MNA Farooq Ahmad Khan Leghari elected from NA-172, DG Khan. The LHC appointed Justice (r) Karamat Nazir Bhandari as local commission and asked him to record statements of the witnesses and filed in court by April 30. The election petition was filed by Rao Abdul Karim, a defeated candidate from the same constituency, accusing Mr Leghari of committing various irregularities during Feb-2008 general election besides poll rigging.
