LAHORE - The speakers at a seminar urged the media to play its pivotal role to ensure access of children towards their rights as there is a great need to launch nationwide comprehensive media campaign to discourage and thwart the culture of violence against children. Different renowned personalities belonging to the media and education institution lauded the services of UNICEF which always gave its helping hand in world for stopping the child abuse and exploitation, as it was mentioned that shelters should be provided to the victim children in society. Society for the Protection of the Rights of the Child (SPARC) arranged a seminar on Role of Media in Reducing the Violence against Children in Lahore, and different speakers spoke on rights of children at a local hotel on Friday. The speakers said that there is also need to introduce separate laws to deal with child sexual abuse. Accessible and quality shelters should be made for victims of sexual abuse and other forms of exploitation. The seminar was attended by a visible number of journalists representing print and electronic media including renowned journalist Badar Alam, embedded journalist Hamid Mir, former director and dean of PU Institute of Communication Studies Prof Dr Mughees Uddin Sheikh, Dr Rashda Qureshi, Isaar Rana, M Hussain Naqi and Salman Abid. Dr Mughees said that we should see best interest of a child and unnecessary sensationalism over the issue is also the violation of basic rights of children. Hamid Mir said that the media should present the real picture of any incident of abuse without becoming party as media should play its role of keeping people aware of such issues like child abuse and exploitation of children rights. He said that it was not the duty of only government but other stakeholders should also play their role in curbing the exploitation of child rights. Badar Alam said that it is the duty of media to highlight children issues.
