LAHORE - PPP’s Central Punjab President Mian Manzoor Wattoo on Thursday said that all the Opposition parties including the PTI would cooperate with one another in the coming Local Bodies elections through seat adjustments.
He was replying to a question after chairing a party meeting held at his residence to make arrangements to receive the outgoing President Asif Ali Zardari when he arrives here on the evening of September 8th.
He was asked to comment on the statement by PTI’s spokeswoman that her party would not forge any alliance with the PPP except extending cooperation on the issue of Local Government Act.
“There would be cooperation with the PTI and other parties with regard to seat adjustments”, he said, adding, that it was not even necessary to have such an arrangement on all seats.
Wattoo told reporters that party leadership had authorised its Secretary General Sardar Latif Khosa to challenge the Local Government Act in the court as the PPP had its reservations over holding of the local polls on non-party basis, which, he said, was against the basic spirit of devolution of power.
He said his party was also concerned about Chief Minister’s powers to suspend the powers of the Mayors and the Chairmen of District Councils.
He asserted that under the Constitution the government could not undertake delimitations as provide for in the LG law.
This power lies with the Election Commission, he added.
PPP’s Punjab Executive Committee also adopted a resolution lauding President Zardari on completion of his five-year term and for promoting the politics of tolerance and reconciliation and strengthening democracy in the country.
