Authority to run BRTS, says CM


LAHORE – Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has said that a legislation will be done to set up an autonomous authority to operate the Bus Rapid Transit System. The system, he said, would develop knack of travelling through public transport instead of personal vehicles. “This will result in saving energy,” said Shahbaz while addressing  on Saturday a meeting held to review the progress made so far on the BRTS.
The CM said that buses plying under the system would be air-conditioned, environment-friendly and would have e-ticketing. These buses will be beneficial for physically handicapped people and the platforms of the bus stands will be of low for the convenience of passengers, he added. The CM said that modern transport technology, e-ticketing, intelligent transport system, swiftness and latest facilities for the passengers would make Bus Rapid Transit System unprecedented. He said that in view of usefulness of the modern system it could also be adopted by other provinces.
The CM said that it had been decided to set up an autonomous authority to operate the BRTS for which necessary legislation was underway. He said that the model of the Indian city, Ahmadabad, would be adopted to benefit to the maximum.
Briefing about the project, the CM said that the rapid transport system would link different industrial, trade, educational and business centers of the City with each other and the passengers would timely reach their destinations. He said that the Punjab government was making public transport system at par with the international standard. The CM maintained that latest intelligent transport system would ensure smooth traffic flow and protection of life and property of the people. Like other schemes this project will also be executed in a transparent manner, the CM assured.
