CM orders streamlining of traffic system

LAHORE-Punjab Chief Minister, Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif has said that traffic problem in the province especially provincial metropolis has assumed serious proportions and calls for immediate remedial measures. Presiding over a high level meeting regarding traffic management, here on Sunday, the CM said that performance of traffic police was also disappointing due to which people were facing hardships. He said that he wanted results and an effective strategy should be adopted for streamlining traffic system and all out resources should be utilized for this purpose. Member National Assembly Hanif Abbasi, Members Provincial Assembly Khawaja Salman Rafiq, Zaeem Qadri, Khawaja Imran Nazir, Rana Muha-mmad Afzal, Advisor Jehanzeb Burki, Chairman Task force Khawaja Ahmed Hasaan, Additional Chief Secretary, Inspector General Police, Secretary Home, Secretary Transport, Commissioner La-hore, DIG Traffic Police as well as senior officers concerned were present. The CM said that traffic system was an indicator of discipline and civilization but unfortunately traffic system in our society did not reflect this fact. He said that traffic jams were frequent and sometimes even ambulances stuck up while traffic wardens remained only bystanders instead of controlling the situation. He said that due to poor performance of the department concerned the situation was aggravating which was a matter of serious concern. He said that this state of affairs could no longer be tolerated and measures will have to be taken on war footing to improve the system. Shahbaz said that short, medium and long-term policies will have to be adopted for this purpose. He said that either a new authority should be set up or the existing resources should be utilized in a proper manner as he wants results. He said that huge resources were being spent on the salaries of traffic wardens therefore they should give up their negligent attitude and perform their duties efficiently for streamlining traffic. He said that former Inspector General Police and Advisor Jehanzeb Burki will look after the traffic affairs in future and the committee headed by him will submit solid recommendations within next two days for the improvement of traffic system. He said that concrete measures will be taken for this purpose in the light of these recommendations. He said all traffic signals should be functional and the department concerned should ensure implementation of his instructions. Advisor Jehanzeb Burki and Air Commodore (Retd.) Khalid Bashir gave a detailed briefing for the improvement of traffic system. The participants of the meeting also submitted their proposals for this purpose.
