SCBA to frame strategy on 'lockdown' arrests

LAHORE - President Supreme Court Bar Association Ali Ahmad Kurd has said that his Bar would work out a strategy in case any lawyer was arrested anywhere in the country on account of lock-up of courts incident. Talking informally to mediamen during his visit to the Lahore High Court for hearing the suo moto proceedings by a seven-member Bench on the November 4 lock-up of lower level courts in the city, Kurd replied to a question that lawyers were struggling for the establishment of an independent judiciary in the country and their act was a symbolic protest. He did not take in good taste the suo moto proceedings on the incident and said that the court should have avoided them in view of the fact that the lawyers were struggling for rule of law and independence of judiciary. To a question on the possible reaction by his Bar if lawyers were arrested on account of the lock-up issue, he said he wanted to make it clear that in case any lawyer was arrested anywhere in the country on the basis of this incident, his body would meet and frame a severe strategy to counter the action. In response to a question, he strongly dispelled the impression that the lawyers' movement had weakened or the community was disarrayed. "Our movement today is as strong as it was after March 9, 2007 occurrence and in the time to come it would gain more momentum and intensity," Kurd said. Quetta-based SCBA President, Kurd earlier went round the Lahore High Court premises with a large number of the city lawyers. When asked by a journalist about this activity, he replied (possibly in lighter vein) that they were surrounding the courts. Lawyers welcome adjournment Lawyers in the city have welcomed adjournment of the suo moto proceedings on the lock-up of courts incident terming the move a means to reduce tension between the Bench and the Bar. Chairman Save Judiciary Committee Abdul Rashid Qureshi and Secretary Mian Jamil Akhtar stated on Friday that the gesture to put off hearing of the matter would go a long way to stave off confrontation between the Bench and the Bar. They said the judiciary should take pride on the lawyers' movement that aimed at ensuring independence of the judiciary and establishing rule of law in the country. In the course of that struggle, they said, lock up of the courts was just symbolic to make the rulers realise the gravity of the issue and to let them know that the lawyers meant business. The lawyers have also demanded the Punjab Governor to avoid passing 'inflammatory' statements against the lawyers and to say only what befitted the prestige of his office. They said the statements by the Governor Punjab were creating problems for the government and therefore he must take care.
