CM OKs water, sewer plans

LAHORE - Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has granted approval to a phased programme for improvement of water supply, drainage and sewerage system in five big cities of the province including Lahore, Faisalabad, Multan, Gujranwala and Rawalpindi.
He was presiding over a meeting on Tuesday which reviewed various proposals for improving water supply, drainage and sewerage system in big cities of the province. MNA Hamza Shahbaz Sharif, Provincial Minister for Housing Tanvir Aslam Malik, Members Provincial Assembly Chaudhary Shahbaz, Ghazali Saleem Butt, Waheed Gull, Vice Chairman LDA Khawaja Ahmed Hasaan, Chairman Planning & Development, Secretary Housing, Commissioner and District Coordination Officer Lahore, Director General LDA, Managing Director WASA and other concerned officials were present on the occasion.
Addressing the meeting, the chief minister directed that planning be made for improving water supply, drainage and sewerage system in five major cities of Punjab including Lahore to meet the future needs. He said that this programme should be implemented in phases. He said that in accordance with the policy of Punjab government, the programme would also be implemented speedily and in a transparent manner. He directed that short, medium and long term planning be made for this purpose.
Shahbaz Sharif issued instructions for setting up a separate company for the implementation of the project and said that provision of the best services to the masses is the prime responsibility of the government and no hurdle would be tolerated in this regard.
The meeting also gave approval to the pilot project for the improvement of water supply, drainage and sewerage system in Johar Town, Tajpura and Shadbagh.
Shahbaz Sharif said that remodelling of the drainage system would be undertaken keeping in view the needs of the population. He stressed upon authorities concerned to immediately start de-silting of drains and complete all arrangements for drainage of rainwater before the onset of monsoon. He said that strict action would be taken in case of complaints of accumulation of water during rainy season. Commissioner Lahore Division and DG LDA gave a detailed briefing on improvement of water supply, drainage and sewerage system.
