FIA officials' walk against corruption today

LAHORE - FIA Punjab officials will hold Anti-Corruption Walk from their office to Regal Chowk to observe the International Anti Corruption Day on Thursday (today) and show their commitment against corruption. Director FIA Zafar Ahmad Qureshi will head the walk. Due to security reasons the route of the walk was kept short, said an officer of FIA. It was only a symbolic event and actual commitment is against corruption which is very much reflected from the performance of their department head, Zafar Qureshi who put hands on big fish after taking charge of the office. It is worth mentioning here that in Pakistan, International Anti-Corruption Day is being observed at the time when there were number of mega scams surfaced wherein corruption was committed at high level. Among these scams which reveled very recently included National Insurance Company scam, financial irregularities in haj operation, NLC, and regular corruption in PIA, Steel Mills and Pakistan Railways. It is pertinent to mention here that Pakistan is among the most corrupt countries in the world, moving up from the 42 position to the 34th rank in 2010, according to the Corruption Perceptions Index including 178 most corrupt states, revealed by the Transparency International in Pakistan. During last two years, there had been unprecedented cases of corruption involving billions of rupees in public sector organisation. A govt servant having a monthly salary between $ 100-200 in these nations can barely live to support a family of four members, said an FIA officer. seeking anonymity. Anti-corruption drive in these sectors should be catapulted resulting in lifting their living standards. He was of the view that UN should come up with clear-cut regulations to combat the corruption on the occasion of International Anti-Corruption Day. Governments, private industries, NGOs, media and citizens across the world are joining hands to combat this crime. But unfortunately our government was not happy with the Transparency International which unearthed the scam like NIC in Pakistan and threatened its staff of dire consequences. Chairman of TI in Pakistan, Adil Gillani told TheNation that earlier Pakistani rulers hired the services of TI but when it unearthed the scam of NIC then they became unhappy with it. He said that TI had helped Pakistan government in several projects to maintain transparency.
