LAHORE – In an emergent meeting of Pakistan National Forum (PNF) on Friday, the participants, having military and judicial background, held the unanimous view that elections must be held on time in order to strengthen democracy
“The postponement of polls for any reason will have adverse effect on Pakistan’s internal stability and political coherence”, said the speakers who included Air Marshal (r) Zafar A Ch, Justice (r) Riaz Ahmad Sheikh, Col (r) Ikramullah Khan, Prof Dr Hassan Askari Rizvi, Lt Gen (r) Naseer Akhtar and Lt Gen (r) Nishat Ahmad.
Noting that the prevailing situation has alarmed every patriotic citizen, they stressed that highest priority must be given to holding of fair, free and transparent general elections.
The speaker resolved that firm commitment to genuine democracy rooted in the will of the people based on constitutional supremacy, rule of law, independence of judiciary was the goal to be achieved. They were also unanimous on the point that all pillars of the state and state functionaries should perform their functions within the limits prescribed by the constitution.
The issue of creation of new provinces also came under discussion. The participants opined that it should be left to the new Parliament and new Provincial Assemblies which should also legislate to ensure that elections to the Local Bodies are held according to the law. The meeting viewed that media being the fourth pillar of the state must maintain its independence in the course of the elections by giving impartial and correct information to the people.
The speaker showed concern over the efforts being made by certain quarters to make the Election Commission controversial at this point of time. “This will be prejudicial to the holding of free and fair elections”, they observed.
They called upon the Federal Government announce the election schedule at the earliest in consultation with other political parties. This will bring an end to dharnas and protest marches by different political parties, they viewed.
Expressing concern over deteriorating law and order situation, the speakers remarked warned that if violence persists the prospects of peaceful elections will be undermined.
They appealed to the political parties participating in the elections to strictly observe the Election Code of Conduct announced by the Election Commission in letter and spirit. “We also appeal to the electorate to fully exercise their right to vote so that the will of the people of Pakistan is reflected in the results of the elections”.
