Cellular company to partner with farmers

LAHORE - University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) Chancellor Prof Dr Talat Naseer Pasha has requested for combined laboratories to ensure quality of feed for the livestock. He was addressing a certificate distribution ceremony on Veterinary Disease Diagnostic Techniques on Friday.
The workshop was organized by University Diagnostic Lab. He said the government should combine efforts with the University to check the quality of feed as well as meat. He went on to say that partnership between Telenor and Livestock and Dairy Development Department would benefit farmers in receiving information for their livestock businesses through telecom. He termed it as a great initiative.
“The poultry sector is the most attractive investment venture as it is the second largest industry after textile. The livestock growth was not satisfactory a decade ago, but now it is growing very fast,” said Dr Pasha, adding the farmer had to realise the importance of livestock and that no one could afford ill animals or the economic loss this could present.
The UVAS vice chancellor said that 10 years ago the share of livestock in agriculture GDP was 39 per cent, which has now risen to 55.1 per cent. He said that the private sector had also contributed and set up state-of-the-art slaughter houses. Later, he distributed certificates among the participants of the three-day workshop.
