Chief selector Sallu resigns

LAHORE - A day after the appointment of the new Pakistan Cricket Board, chief selector Salahuddin Ahmed Sallu has resigned from his first ever paid selector's post. Sallu resigned after fulfilling his last assignment of announcing the Pakistan team for Canada quadrangular tournament. Ijaz Butt on Wednesday took charge of the office formally after the board received the notification from the sports ministry. But details of Sallu's resignations were not clear yet but it was learnt that he stated the new chairman would want to have a new set up and it would be appropriate to leave the place for the chairman to decide. However, there were roumours that Butt wanted to change the selection committee and bring a team of his choice. Several more changes in the PCB set-up are likely to take place as the 73-year-old new cricket chief took over from Dr Nasim Ashraf who resigned from the post on August 18 on the same day when President Pervez Musharraf, patron of the PCB, relinquished power to avoid impeachment from the parliament. "Yes there will be lot of changes in the board. Perhaps the new selectors will be named within few days," he further added. Ijaz would be representing the PCB in the next week's ICC meeting taking place in Dubai. "Hopefully I shall be attending the meeting," he said. Earlier, sports minister Nazmuddin Khan was preparing to represent the board at the ICC meeting. He was also willing to take a few cricketers (including Imran Khan, but because of Imran's pre-occupation, it was possible to carry the legend with him. The PCB Wednesday received the official notification of his appointment announced by the Federal Sports Ministry. The notification states: "The President of Islamic Republic of Pakistan in his capacity as Patron of Cricket Board in exercise of the powers vested in him under Article-5 of the Constitution of the PCB has been pleased to appoint Mr. Muhammad Ijaz Butt as Chairman of the Pakistani Cricket Board with immediate effect for a period of three years". Ijaz is the second Test cricketer after Abdul Hafeez Kardar who will head the PCB. Former cricketer Javed Burki served as chairman of the ad hoc committee. Butt played Test cricket from 1959 to 1962 and toured West Indies and England with the Pakistan cricket team. He played first-class cricket form 1955/56 -1967/68. Ijaz was born on March 10, 1938 in Sialkot. He graduated from Government College Lahore in 1959. He did PMD from Harvard Business School, Harvard University in 1969 and SMP from Harvard Business School, Harvard University, Vevy, Switzerland in 1978. Before his appointment as chairman of the board, member of the governing board  and also head of the internal audit committee. He was also the honorary secretary of the Board of Control in Pakistan (BCCP) from 1987 to 1988. During his tenure as secretary, Butt was sent as a special envoy of the President of Pakistan to resolve a serious issue which had arisen between Pakistan and Sri Lanka cricket teams which he resolved most adroitly. He was also the joint secretary of the Organising Committee of the World Cup in 1987 and was elected President of the Lahore Cricket Association from 1978 to 1987.
