LAHORE - Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has constituted a four-member education advisory group headed by Education Minister Rana Mashhood Ahmed. It will comprise Dr Zafar Iqbal Qureshi, Dr Amjad Saqib and Dr Ayesha Ghaus Pasha as members. The advisory group will review the recommendations formulated by the 20-member special committee with Senator Sardar Zulfiqar Ali Khan Khosa in chair five months ago.
Presiding over the meeting of Vice Chancellors Council at Government College University on Tuesday, Punjab Education Minister Rana Mashhood Ahmed elaborated the functions of newly constituted advisory group and informed the VCs that the recommendations aimed at bringing radical changes in the education system being run in the province of Punjab will be reviewed by the advisory group comprising three eminent educationists and they will accommodate the input of all stakeholders to commensurate the recommendations with the present scenario.
During the meeting, the VCs of all 17 public sector universities of the province presented cheques worth Rs 13.7 million for rehabilitation of earthquake affectees of district Awaraan and Kech Makraan area of Balochistan. This amount includes voluntary donation from the student bodies of various universities and one day salary of the gazetted staff and faculty members to Prime Minister’s Relief Fund for earthquake affectees of Balochistan.
The minister thanked the donors’ spirit and recalled that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has appealed to the nation for donating generously and standby Baloch brethren in their hour of adversity.
The minister said that rehabilitation of earthquake affectees was a continued process which would take several years for its completion. He disclosed that the Punjab CM planned to generate funds up to the tune of Rs.800 million through public donations to construct a modern school and a state of the art hospital in Awaraan City which would be a gift of great value for the people in distress.
The VCs Council endorsed almost all the recommendations regarding radical changes in the current educational system with some queries. It was decided that these queries will be met in the review process by education advisory group in the days to come. It was also decided to regularly hold quarterly meetings of the VCs Council to inculcate improvement in the future plan of both elementary and higher education in Punjab.
