Afridi asked to appear before PCB probe committee

LAHORE The inquiry committee probing the reasons of Australia series debacle has asked flamboyant all-rounder Shahid Afridi to appear before them to record his statement. A six-member inquiry committee will see Afridi on Friday where the all-rounder will explain his ball-biting antic in Perth, while captain Mohammad Yousuf and coach Intikhab Alam will give their versions of the teams comprehensive rout in Australia. Yes, we have also summoned Shahid Afridi on Friday. We have been directed by the board chairman to treat this inquiry as very seriously and not spare anyone found guilty of not doing his duty in Australia, Pakistan Cricket Boards Chief Operating Officer Wasim Bari said. Leading the team in Yousufs absence, Afridi was seen biting the ball in the final ODI at Perth, which earned him a two-match ban. Apart from Afridi, Yousuf and Alam, the PCB inquiry committee led by Bari has also summoned team manager Abdul Raquib for its first hearing. The committee also includes former Test captain Wasim Akram who has requested the board to appoint Afridi as captain for all three forms of the game despite his ball-tampering indiscretion. Bari said the committee would speak to all the team officials and players and also get feedback from the media and other independent sources in Australia during the course of its probe. The idea behind this probe is to suggest ways to put Pakistan cricket back on the right track, Bari said. Earlier, Pakistan team coach Intikhab Alam submitted his report regarding the teams tour of Australia. He said in the report that a lack of planning was seen in the Pakistan team on the tour. Rejecting reports of discord in the team, he said his team lacked the temperament needed to win against the world champions Australia and blamed the players for being physically and mentally inferior to the Kangaroos. In his tour report, Alam has blamed the negative approach of players for their abysmal performance Down Under. The report, which has been sent to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) underlined various reasons for Pakistans complete whitewash during the tour. However, there is no mention of severe differences between senior and junior players of the team. The senior players were simply not up to the mark as some of them were out of form while others are already in the twilight stages of their international career, the report said. Taking the responsibility for the disastrous tour, Alam has suggested that the PCB should ensure proper grooming of young players. The next generation of Pakistani cricketers should be groomed into world class fielders and trained and hardened in a way that they exhibit better temperament when representing their country at the highest level, Alam said in his report. He, however, washed his hands off the continuous display of poor fielding skills by the players, saying no coach can bring about an improvement in the fielding within a few days. The PCB should take this issue seriously and ensure that the standard of fielding is improved at the junior, club and domestic levels through regular and specialised fielding camps all over the country, the report said. According to Intikhab, Shahid Afridi showed irresponsibility being the captain and his bid to tamper the ball is beyond any sense.
