Turkey assures support to Pakistan

ISLAMABAD (APP) - President of Turkey Abdullah Gul has assured his countrys continued unflinching support to Pakistan. This assurance was given in his meeting with Pakistans Parliamentary Delegation headed by Speaker National Assembly Dr. Fehmida Mirza, in Ankara, says a message received from Turkey. The Turkish President termed the friendship between his country and Pakistan a historic association that is deeply imbedded in our peoples hearts and minds. He said that the Turkish people could never forget the sacrifices of the Muslims of the Indo-Pakistan during the Turk War of Liberation. Mr. Gul also lauded Dr. Fehmida Mirzas position and termed her a role model in the Muslim World. While referring to his forthcoming visit to Pakistan in end of March this year, Turkish President said that he would be taking with him noted Turkish investors and businessmen for a meaningful economic and business relationship between the two countries. He also paid rich tribute to Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto and also appreciated the role of President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani in steering Pakistan through the present tough times. Dr. Fehmida Mirza thanked the Turkish President and appreciated his role as a true leader of the Muslim World. She apprised the Turkish President about the contributions of Pakistans Parliament during the last two years in addressing various issues confronting the nation today. She said that the political leadership of the country was on one page as there was complete consensus on key issues like democracy, fight against terrorism and peace in the region. The Speaker also called on Mehmet Ali Sahin, speaker of the Turkish Grnat National Assembly in Parliament House in Ankara. Both the Speakers vowed to further strengthen the existing relations between the two countries by forging close parliamentary ties. During their meeting they reviewed the current status of parliamentary cooperation and other areas of mutual collaboration. Dr. Mirza explained the current situation in the region and Pakistans efforts in combating terrorism. She stressed the international community to strengthen Pakistan by lending complete support to the countrys nascent democracy. Time is running short. If we are not able to address peoples concern, they will lose hope in democracy, Dr. Mirza added. She said that parliamentarians of the two sides could play a meaningful role in the region as parliamentary diplomacy could enable the real policy makers to understand each-others points of view better. The Speaker highly appreciated the role played by Turkey in bringing Afghanistan and Pakistan closer through the Trilateral Process. She also lauded relentless support of Government and people of Turkey in the aftermath of the fateful October 8, 2005 earthquake which effected large number of people in Kashmir and the countrys North. In his remarks, Mr. Sehin paid tributes to the stature of his Pakistani counterpart and said that Turkey felt pride in her election as the first Muslim Woman Speaker. He also ensured continued assistance to Pakistan in seeking sustainable solutions to its current economic problems, particularly in the energy sector. Later, the President of the Foreign Relations Committee of the Turkish Assembly Murat Merrcan also called on the Speaker. The Members of his Committee and Pakistani delegation were also present in the meeting where the two sides discussed in detail number of issues concerning the present situation on Afghanistan, Pakistans relations with India and the Kashmir Dispute, the Trilateral process. Dr. Fehmida Mirza also visited the Turkish National Education Ministry where she was received by the Turkish Education Minister Ms. Nimet Cubukcu. Ms. Cubukcu informed the Speaker of the current status of cooperation in the vital field of education between the two countries. The Speaker stressed on improving the literacy rates, terming them the true indicators of a nations real human development.
