Police big guns admit low performance

LAHORE The high ups of the provincial police ultimately have admitted that the performance of their sagacious officers have comparatively decreased in this year despite the allocation of billions of rupees by the PML-N-led Punjab government. According to official website of the Punjab Police www.punjabpolice.gov.pk/performance, the performance of the Punjab Police has decreased. On the other side, the official handouts, communiqus and press notes regarding the police performance have also exposed the deteriorating situation of law and order across the province, which have been admitted by the big guns of the department. According to Performance Page, the provincial police have showed their performance in four categories including I: Recovery of Illicit Arms, II: Arrest of Proclaimed Offenders/Court Absconders, III: Armed Encounters and IV: Gangs Busted. As per official website, total 8,359 cases regarding Recovery of Illicit Arms were lodged in the year 2010 up to February while about 7,843 cases of same nature had been traced as compared to the corresponding period in 2011. Moreover, the Punjab Police had apprehended 8,355 accused who had been involved in smuggling of arms while the provincial police had managed to hunt over 7,800 accused of the aforesaid category so far. According to details, 45 grenades, 120 Kalashnikovs, 567 Rifles, 960 Guns, 5,778 Revolvers/Pistols, 675 Carbines, 34,308 Cartridges and 229 share edge weapons were recovered in 2010 up to February while total 4 grenades, 132 Kalashnikovs, 667 rifles, 903 guns, 5,461 revolvers/pistols, 558 carbines, 46,732 cartridges and 151 sharp edge weapons had been recovered so far. The official website of the Punjab Police further exposed the 'effective strategy might be chalked out by the big guns of the department regarding apprehension of Proclaimed Offenders (POs). According to official statistics, total 18,268 POs were captured in the year 2010 while only 15,238 POs had been arrested up to February. Similarly, total 8,107 Court Absconders (CAs) were arrested in 2010 during specified timing while 7,807 CAs had been hunted so far. Armed Encounters: Total 58 police encounters took place in 2010 (Up to Feb) in which six police, 45 criminals were killed and almost 48 were arrested. About 15 policemen and 16 criminals also suffered multiple bullet injuries. In 2011, total 38 encounters had been occurred, leaving five policemen, 21 criminals dead while 35 gangsters had been arrested. The performance of the police regarding gangs-busting remained satisfactory as about 380 gangs were smashed in 2010 while 459 gangs had been busted. Over 1,300 members of notorious gangs were arrested in the year 2010 while 1,612 accomplices had been apprehended so far. The provincial police also recovered booty over Rs 14 million in 2010 and Rs 33 million had been recovered. Interestingly, the high ups of the police department requesting anonymity, however, said in fact the police performance was expedited up to the level of praise as the crime was decreased in 2011. However, when asked about the alarming increase in crimes of all categories including murders, robbery/dacoity, rape, gang rape, snatching and etc, the authorities badly failed in furnishing any suitable reply.
