'WWf-Pakistan' lauds media role

LAHORE - WWF Pakistan has lauded media and Met Department for their timely and accurate reporting about the cyclone, which helped the government and concerned agencies in effectively taking measures to minimise casualties. Experts of the WWF-P noted that due to the proactive approach employed by the Met Department, the masses were made aware of the threats of the cyclone. On the other hand, media did a commendable role in keeping the people, especially those in the direct path of the cyclone, updated about the situation by banking upon the technological expertise of the Met office, and presenting it in everyday language so that the level of awareness amongst the common man was increased. In a statement issued here Friday, Dr Ghulam Akbar, Regional Director/Team Leader, Indus for All Programme, WWF-P, said, Due to precise forecast of Cyclone Phet by Met Department, government and other relief agencies were well prepared to address the challenges rising from the cyclone. This tremendously helped in minimising the casualties. It was noted in this statement that the timely alerts by the Met Department were shared in an organised manner. He also praised the role of media, both print and electronic, in coordinating with the authorities and the Met Department, and keeping the masses up to date about the situation.
