LAHORE - Terming the Punjab Local Government Act undemocratic, the PTI provincial leadership has announced to launch peaceful protests if it fails to get justice from courts.
PTI Punjab President Ijaz Chaudhry and General Secretary Dr Yasmin Rashid, addressing a press conference on Wednesday at the party office, announced to launch peaceful protests against the Local Government Act if it failed to get relief from the Supreme Court and the Lahore High Court.
They said PTI would move the SC in case the LHC did not declare the act illegal while the party would launch peaceful protests after its failure to get relief from both the courts.
They contended that holding the local bodies’ polls on non-party basis was against the spirit of democracy and PTI would not let that happen. They added their party had challenged the act while other opposition parties in the Punjab Assembly would also file separate petitions against the act.
They repeated their stance that PTI would not contest local bodies’ elections from any joint opposition platform. They, however, said it would make seat arrangements with likeminded political parties.
Meanwhile, Iranian Counsel General Muhammad Hussain Nabi Asadi met PTI leader and Punjab Assembly Opposition Leader Mian Mehmood-ur-Rasheed and discussed with the matters concerning Pak-Iran relations. Mehmood and Asadi were of the considered opinion that Pak-Iran Gas Line Project would help address the issue of energy crisis in Pakistan. They added the project was an example of deep friendship between the two brotherly countries, as it was signed despite the opposition of the international powers.
