Shoaib, Akmal named in Pakistan squad

LAHORE - Controversial fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar has been named along with Kamran Akmal in the 15-member squad for the next month's ICC Champions Trophy cricket Tournament. Addressing a press conference, chief selector Salahuddin Ahmed said that his fitness has been impressive during the practice matches held at Multan. "His demeanors and the court case plus the Rs seven million fine has not been aligned with his selection," the board official said. Akhtar returned to the team after December last and since then he has been involved in a tiff with the board in one way or the other be it discipline or fitness. Kamran Akmal, who was rested for Asia Cup after his poor Kitply Cup performance, has been included in the team replacing inexperienced Sarfraz Ahmed. Bazid Khan and Khalid Latif have also found place in the team and so did Abdur Rauf. Bazid and Latif would be strengthening the void left by Mohammad Yousuf and the selectors hoped they would being depth in the in batting. He said that captain Shoaib Malik has been included in the team as an all-rounder. Fellow fast bowler Umar Gul and all-rounder Shahid Afridi were also included in the squad despite fitness fears. "Shoaib, Gul and Afridi carry a lot of experience and we are confident they will be 100 per cent fit for the tournament," said Salahuddin. He further said that Salman has also recovered to play. On the selection of Saeed Ajmal, he said that the spinner has very bright future. Before announcing the team, the selection committee checked the medical reports of Salman Butt, Umer Gul and Shahid Afridi. Fawad Alam was dropped from the final 15. The selection committee had a detailed discussion with captain Shoaib Malik and coach Geoff Lawson on Monday and after their choice the team was got approved by the governing board before its announcement.
