LAHORE - A 24-year-old staff nurse of the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital committed suicide by swallowing poisonous pills a week after her paramour ended his life in a rented house near the hospital. The hospital administration hushed up the incident of mysterious deaths of the staff nurse and the youth and handed over their bodies to the families without postmortem. The local police were even not called for any legal action. The deceased, identified as Shabana, a resident of Sargodha, was working in the Female Surgical Unit-I, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital while the youth namely Anees Ahmad, 35, was resident of Shah Alam. Father of two, Anees and unmarried Shabana were living in a rented quarter near Waris Road for the last couple of years. Both committed suicide over some serious issues best known to them. A fact-finding team of senior doctors and admin officials was constituted by the hospital administration in this regard. The inquiry was later suspended on the directions of the high-ups concerned immediately after it found some serious negligence on the part of the administration and noticed mysterious activities of several staff nurses usually at late nights. According to the sources, Shabana was taken to the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital emergency department in critical condition after she swallowed poisonous pills over unknown reason here the other day. Doctors tried to save her life but to no avail. The sources said that Anees and Shabana were present at their rented quarter at Waris Road a week ago when suddenly former's condition went critical. Shabana immediately called Rescue 1122 officials who reached the site and shifted him to the emergency department of the hospital. The doctors later called the relatives of the youth but he had died before their arrival. Anees's family protested against his mysterious death and asked the hospital administration to find out facts behind his death. In the meantime, the sources said, Shabana disappeared from the scene. During the course of investigation, the hospital administration came to know that the staff nurse was living in the hospital's hostel. Her roommate staff nurse told the inquiry team that Shabana used to go to the rented quarter at Waris Road during nights. The hospital's record later showed that several staff nurses including Shabana were found missing from their hostels usually at nights. The hostels are situated in the premises of the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. They used to leave their hostels at nights without seeking permission. During the course of investigation it further came to the knowledge of the hospital administration that some staff nurses used to go outside the hospital at night after they were granted station out permission (SOP). The SOP is usually granted when the hospital employees have to go to their houses but the hospital's record was showing some serious faults as some female staff were given SOP 20 times in a month. The revelation of involvement of female employees and some senior officials in mysterious activities has put a question mark on the poor administration. On this, the sources said, the hospital authorities took the decision to suspend inquiry claiming that fact-finding report would earn bad name to the institute. Body of the deceased nurse was handed over to her family without autopsy.
