LAHORE - Punjab University Syndicate expressed resentment over a letter written by provincial ombudsperson to the members of the syndicate body for stoppage of proceedings against Khujista Rehan, a lecturer of University Law College who has filed a complaint of sexual harassment against Vice Chancellor Dr Mujahid Kamran. The syndicate also decided to summon Khujista Rehan for personal hearing on the issue of use of abusive and derogatory language against the VC.
In a meeting on Saturday, syndicate member Justice Mazahir Hussain Naqvi expressed his anger on behavior of provincial ombudsperson, saying that she had gone beyond her powers by writing letter for stoppage of proceeding against Khujista. “Why contempt of court proceeding should not be initiated against her on this letter,” he remarked. Other syndicate members also seconded Justice Naqvi’s remarks and said that provincial ombudsperson challenged the credibility of syndicate. They said ombudsperson’s attitude seemed biased towards the case.
Khujista Rehan had also criticised the provincial ombudsperson during her press conference on September 29, saying that the ombudsperson was not able to hear her case of sexual harassment against the PU VC. On the occasion, the lecturer also alleged the provincial ombudsperson of her partiality and favoring the VC.
The syndicate also decided to summon University Law College lecturer Khujista Rehan for personal hearing on use of abusive and derogatory language against the vice chancellor. When the issue of Khujista Rehan was taken up in the meeting, the PU VC left the meeting and the meeting was chaired by member syndicate Justice Naqvi. The syndicate members said according to the Protection against Harassment of Women at the Workplace Act 2010, all correspondence should be secret but the provincial ombudsperson’s letter was published in newspapers when it received to the university administration.
