LAHORE - The scientists of a research institution initiated research to promote the technology for commercial use by producing animal grade single cell proteins from agro-industrial by-products. A group of scientists including Dr Shahjahan Baig, Dr Qurat-ul-Ain, Dr Nadeem and Dr Sakhawat of Pakistan Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (PCSIR) Laboratories Complex, have been working to produce animal grade single cell protein by utilising the carbohydrate and protein rich agro-industrial by-products since last year, who attained considerable achievements regarding mass cultivation by using bio-reactors both through liquid and solid state bio techniques. The exploitation of research and development based innovations achievement are scientific and technology based parameters for economically feasible process which could be employed on small and medium scale industrial sectors in completion state. The scientists have been deeply involved to develop cost effective products with the best utilisation of highly precision based fermentation facilities. According to the scientists, yeasts or microbe-based animal grade single cell protein is better for safe use to increase the protein contents in animal feeds. Dr Shahjahan, a chief scientific officer of PCSIR, said the organism in dried form was imported from different countries and added along with other feed contents. He said that these cells of certain harmless bacteria and yeasts as well as some algae, a minute plant often seen in ponds around villages or ponds or ditches beside the river banks were extensively grown under controlled conditions on mass scale to obtain large amount for supplementation of animal feeds. He said these organisms seemed to be useless but in fact constitute carbohydrate, proteins, vitamins and minerals. He informed that industrialist counties consumed to improve the nutritional value of animal feed facing deficiency of essential nutrients for healthy growth and meat quality of both livestock and poultry. Dr Shahjahan said Pakistan, being an agricultural country was enriched with tremendous amount of agro-industrial wastes and agro-based by-products which needed considerable attention for utilization with the application of modern technology based improvements. "It is well established that bread and feed play pivotal role in the establishment of meat quality for health of human beings. The raw material for the growth of yeasts or beneficial bacterial or algae organisms is generally lingo-cellulose mater rich in carbohydrates, proteins and fats along with a variety of minerals available for the growth of single cell protein containing microbes exerting beneficial impact on ultimate feed for improvement of animals and poultry ration. This is normal practice in tropical and sub-tropical countries." He said the raw material such as cane molasses, cheese whey, and canning wastes, maize wet milling wastes that is corn steep liquor, wheat straw, rice straw, rice husk were abundantly available in Pakistan which could be visualised that single cell proteins processes for production of animal feed were the most attractive conventional animal feed stuffs such as soybean meal and fish meal were imported to many tropical and subtropical countries. One more benefit can be drawn by using single cell protein based microbes in animal feed for livestock or poultry ration primarily act a digestive aid, liver weight gain, feed intake and feed conversion ratio, he said.
