PML-N mulling roadmap to counter PTI anti-govt drive

LAHORE - The PML-N government is going to devise a line of action to counter the Pakistan Tehrike Insaaf’s attempt of building pressure through its protest drive against the rulers and Election Commission of Pakistan.
Though the PML-N is not much worried over the situation after the PTI show in Islamabad; however the party is cautiously reviewing the developments taking place in this connection.
Highly-placed sources in the party said that the government has no intentions of using force to impede or crush the PTI protest, rather the ruling party is pondering over to counter the PTI move through legislative, political mobilisation, party organisational and projection of government performance. The sources said at present analytical work about the agitation drive by the anti-government parties including PTI, PML-Q and PAT is under consideration by the top PML-N hierarchy. Given the country’s security situation, the government is also wary to the fact and wanted that terrorist organisations do not play their evil game taking advantage of the protest situation. As such, any option to deal with the matter by force or through counter rallies by the PML-N, which may aggravate and flare up the situation, does not find favour with the government. There is no panic on the side of the government and it does not want to the get the PTI protest threatening for the democracy and the security, they add.
The PTI is going to hold another meeting in Faisalabad on May 25. Sources are of the view that like Islamabad, the government would give free hand to the PTI for the next rally; however permission would not be given to anyone to take the law into hand or disturb peace. Sources said the party leadership is informally in touch to share view on various suggestions. A suggestion relates to the formation of a committee of all parties having representation in the National Assembly for the purpose of working on election reforms and sharing input on making the election commission more independent and powerful. On recommendations of this committee, a bill is drafted to amend the Constitution with two-third of majority.
The PML-N is also mulling over the option of closing ranks of anti-protest parties, which included PPP, JUI-F and others, so that a stronger democratic posture is built against the current wave. Sources said the PML-N will soon call Executive Working Committee meeting, which has have not been held over the last more than a year, to discuss the party issues. Various steps would be taken to ensure the party consolidation and organisation at various levels to project the government performance to the masses.  he sources further said the government is also working aggressively to reduce the ongoing power loadshedding and give a people-friendly next budget to defuse pressure which the PTI could otherwise mount by stretching the issues of energy shortage and financial woes of the masses out of proportion.
