Sui Southern turn tables on Customs Opener Asif Zakir hit an unbeaten hundred and his second-wicket partnership with Haris Ayaz gave Sui Southern Gas creditable eight wicket win over Customs which failed to force an advantage in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy first round match here Tuesday at UBL Ground. Asif Zakir scored unbeaten 122 and with Haris Ayaz (68) added 146 runs for the second wicket partnership as the SSGC, needing 239 runs for victory in its second innings, reached the target comfortably with the loss of just two wickets after Customs spinning duo Mansoor Ahmed and Muhammad Nabi failed to trouble the rival batting lion as was expected. Earlier, Customs which had collapsed to paltry 85 in the first innings put up a brave fight in the second innings with Rameez Raja (84), Asad Baig(60), Rawaid Khan(67) and Muhammad Hussain (53) making valuable contribution to teams second effort which ended at 340 giving them an overall advantage of 238 runs. The total was expected to be enough for the Customs to put rivals under pressure and go for victory. Their spinning duo Mansoor Ahmed and Muhammad Nabi, who had shared seven wickets, could not repeat their performance when it was needed most. Though the surface gave some help to spinners but a more cautious and circumspect batting from SSGC steered them to victory which at one stage looked difficult. SSGC resumed its second innings at 16 for one with Asif Zakir batting ten and Haris Ayaz not out one. The two batted with responsibility. They preferred to score in singles and doubles instead of using a more adventurous approach to getting the runs. Their cool headedness finally gave their team fine victory. Asif batted for 187 balls and hit fifteen fours while Haris Ayaz who was promoted in batting order hit seven fours in his 139 ball innings that fetched him 68 runs.
