Court moved against market shifting plan

LAHORE A petition was on Monday moved in the Lahore High Court to question the elimination of the Kot Lakhpat Fruit and Vegetable Market. The new market is being establishment at Mauza Kacha far away from the reach of the city dwellers. The petition, filed by an affected shopkeeper, Abdul Rashid through Ch Aslam Zaeem, has questioned the notification issued in this regard by the Secretary Agriculture on February 1, 2011. The impugned notification is malafide, arbitrary and discriminatory since it been issued to benefit the adjacent Software Technology Park, it was alleged in the application. He says the respondent action was also discriminatory as none of the other three fruit and vegetable markets are being displaced and that once the petitioner has got legal entitlement to do business at a certain place that cannot be taken away. Moreover Agriculture Produce Ordinance of 1978 has not been strictly followed while issuing the said notification, he adds. The petitioner is also aggrieved that relocation of the market miles away from the present location, would not only cause inconvenience, security hazards, and problems to the people and shopkeepers but also up the fruit and vegetable prices manifold due to added expenditure of transportation etc. Justice Mansoor Ali Shah would take up preliminary hearing of the petition on Tuesday (today).
