LAHORE - At least five people were injured in a scuffle between two parties over the issue of seeking tender of a canteen at Gulab Devi Hospital in Naseerabad police precincts on Monday. The two contractors approached the canteen site and started negotiations with the Hospital administration for winning the contract for themselves. However, men from one of the parties started threatening those of the other of dire consequences and asked them to pull out of the competition for the tender. An armed brawl set in when both the parties exchanged harsh words, a police officer requesting anonymity said, adding some four men were fatally hurt in the fight. Iftikhar Ahmad (35), Nasir (34), Mukhtar Ahmad (32), Ghulam Mustafa (32) and Ijaz (30) were rushed to the Lahore General Hospital for treatment where the condition of one of them was told to be critical. A stampede-like situation resulted when both the accused parties fired their guns, police investigators said and added that dozens of patients, their attendants and visitors sustained minor injuries in the stampede. Panic gripped the locality after the incident, an on duty police officer maintained. The Gulab Devi Hospital administration, however, flatly refused to comment on the situation, and maintained it was a personal issue between the two groups. Naseerabad police have registered an FIR against both the accused contractors.
