Anti-Terror fight needs Elite Force shake-up

LAHORE The Elite Police Force would be reorganised so as to combat terrorism, stop untoward incidents and to provide security for the people, the Punjab inspector general of police said on Saturday. Addressing 940 passed out jawans of 13th batch of elite police training programme at the Bedian Road Training Centre, Lahore, Mr Javed Iqbal said that the proposal would be implemented from the next year following the special directives by the Punjab chief minister. He also said that financial assistance by the CM had already been provided in this regard. According to the programme, in all the big cities including Lahore, Gujranwala, Rawalpindi, Faisalabad and Multan, separate and independent police lines of the Elite Police Force will be set up. The IGP stressed upon the jawans to serve the nation with devotion and dedication. He asked them to focus their energies on the purpose for which they had been imparted training. The IGP said that the Force was playing an exemplary role in the Punjab province and various measures were afoot to enhance its capacity to cope with the present challenges of security. He also thanked Chief of Army staff Gen Ashfaq Pervaiz Kiani for extending cooperation regarding training process. Afterwards, The IGP was briefed on the achievements of the Force since its inception. He was told that as a result of 7,961 successful operations, 10,248 'criminals had been arrested while 602 'criminals had been killed at the hands of the Force. In other different operations, 250 rocket launchers and grenades were recovered from 'terrorists, it was further said, adding that 1,120 stolen cars, cash of Rs 34 million besides 8630 kg drugs had also been recovered. Later, the IGP distributed prizes among the high achievers of the batch. Additional IG (Training) Sarmed Saeed, Addl IG (Operations) Rafique Hasan, Addl IG (Investigation) Azam Joyia, Addl IG Hamayun Raza Shafi and other police officers were also present.
