Malaysia urges UVAS role in Halal industry

OUR STAF REPORTER LAHORE Malaysias state minister for religious affairs on Saturday urged the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences to play its leading role in introducing Halal industry in Pakistan. During his visit to the university, YB Haji Abdul Malik Kassim, who is also chairman of Penang International Halal Hub, Malaysia, called for introducing Halal industry by adopting the international standard through research developments and commercialisation of new technology. He also talked to UVAS Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Nawaz, Punjab Minister for Livestock Malik Ahmad Ali Aulakh, Livestock and Dairy Development Additional Secretary Khaid Awais Ranjha, Lahore Meat Company Chief Executive Officer Dr Hamid Jalil and faculty members. The Malaysian minister said that Pakistan could generate revenue through Halal industry which would significantly contribute towards the countrys economic development. During a meeting, Kassim explained,We are making consortium to comprise two Thailand universities, two Malaysian university and one Pakistans University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences. Haji Kassim said that the purpose of this group was to set up global standard research and development centre in Halal products. He added that the UVAS should come forward and contribute its expertise and scientific knowledge for such sector. Earlier, the UVAS vice chancellor said,Halal quality is a system based on Shariah requirements and food safety and quality standards. He added, The university has accredited labs (Quality Operation Lab and University Diagnostic Lab) and having facilities for Halal chain. Afterwards, the VC presented a university souvenir to YB Haji Abdul Malik Kassim.
