CM-led meeting mulls alternative power ways

OUR STAFF REPORTER LAHORE - A meeting, chaired by Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif on Monday, mulled ways to introduce alternative power generation sources in the province. Steering Committee Chairman Senator Ishaq Dar, Members National Assembly, Engineer Khurram Dastagir Khan, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Member Provincial Assembly Rana Muhammad Afzal, prominent industrialist Mian Muhammad Mansha, Chairman Pakistan Sugar Mills Association Javed Kayani, Chief Secretary, Chairman Planning & Development, Secretaries of Finance, Energy and Minerals departments, Vice Chairman Punjab Investment Board, representatives of sugar mills and energy experts attended the meeting. The meeting reviewed in detail the project of generation of power from hydle, coal and biogases and decided that the project of generation of power from biogases should be implemented speedily and a transparent policy would be adopted for this purpose. Punjab government and representatives of sugar mills associations would determine the tariff of the power generated from biogases and submit recommendations within a week. Addressing it, the chief minister said stressed the need for working on power generation projects on emergent basis and said that a separate department of energy had been set up for this purpose in Punjab which was working on the projects of power generation from alternative sources including hydle, solar, coal and biogases. He said that from 700 to 1000 megawatt power could be generated from biogases in 45 sugar mills of Punjab which was a more economical source of power generation and a strategy in consultation with sugar mills had been finalized in this regard. Earlier, Secretary Energy Rab Nawaz informed the meeting about the pace of progress on power generation projects and the matters settled with sugar mills for generation of power from biogases. Meanwhile, presiding over a meeting for the promotion of healthy activities in the province, Shahbaz Sharif has said that the Punjab government has evolved a comprehensive programme for the promotion of healthy activities as it was essential for creation of a healthy society. Member National Assembly Bilal Yaseen, members Provincial Assembly Saba Sadiq, Khawaja Salman Rafiq, Khawaja Imran Nazir, Director General PHA and DIG Operations were present. Addional Chief Secretary, Nadeem Hassan Asif gave a detailed briefing regarding establishment of playgrounds and e-libraries in Lahore. The chief minister directed that besides Lahore, a comprehensive programme should also be devised for promoting healthy activities across the province and recommendations in this regard should be submitted within seven days. Presiding another meeting, Shahbaz Sharif issued instructions for considering establishment of a spine centre for the provision of modern treatment facilities to the patients suffering from spinal diseases. The meeting was held with regard to setting up a spine centre here. Member Provincial Assembly Dr. Asad Ashraf, Chairman Planning & Development, Secretaries Finance and Health, Vice Chancellor University of Health Sciences and Principal Post-Graduate Medical Institute attended the meeting. Prof. Dr. Aamir Aziz gave a detailed briefing with regard to diseases of spinal cord.
