Pak troops leave for Congo on UN Mission

OUR STAFF REPORTER LAHORE A batch of 250 Pakistani troops left here on Sunday to perform peace keeping duties under the aegis of United Nations Mission in Congo. Brigadier Humayun Zafar bade them farewell at the Allama Iqbal International Airport, prior to their departure on a UN charted aircraft on Sunday morning. The departing troops will replace the already deployed Pakistan Army Contingent in the war ravaged country as part of the relieve a rotation schedule. Biding the troops adieu, Brigadier Humayun Zafar said that Pakistan Army had a glorious track record of rendering dedicated services for the restoration of peace all over the globe. The services of Pakistani Contingent to secure stable environments for maintenance of peace and order in Somalia, Eastern Slovenia, Bosnia, Haiti, East Temor, Liberia, Sudan, Ivory Coast and enhanced the countrys image among the comity of nations. He urged the troops that they were embarking on a foreign assignment as ambassadors of Pakistan and their every action should be truly reflective of the exemplary traditions of Pakistan Army. The Pakistani peace-keepers are serving in this war ravaged African country since the last three years. Its valiant troops are deployed in the most inaccessible part of the country where various armed combatants belonging to various feuding tribal factions were continuously engaged in intense civil strife. Large influxes of refugees were forced to flee to boarding countries thus creating socio-economic difficulties for the already hard pressed neighbours. The Pakistani contingents as part of the UN Peace-Keeping force has earned laurels for successfully disarming the combatants through peaceful dialogue. They have also helped in relief and repatriation of a large number of refugees by supporting the execution of rehabilitation programme.
