LAHORE - The Punjab Local Government and Community Development Department has stopped the Data Gunj Bukhsh Town Municipal Administration from carrying out the project of installing water filtration plants in 18 union councils and purchase and repair of 36 streetlight related equipment, sources informed The Nation on Monday. The TMA had already invited tenders for installing water filtration plants at the UC level, repair of vehicles and purchase of streetlight related equipment at a cost of Rs 30 million. Sources revealed that the opposition members in Data Town Council submitted application with the secretary LG & CD Department with the request to stop the TMA from inviting tenders, as certain legal obligations were not fulfilled before starting the process. Officials say that that the TMA was stopped from carrying out the project only to please the opponents of Q-League Nazim Tariq Sana Bajwa. They say that the TMA has initiated the project from its own budget and the council has granted formal approval for installing 18 filtration plants each costing Rs 1.156m and repair and purchase of 36 items relating to the streetlights. Tariq Sana Bajwa said that that the TMA was installing water filtration plants in all the UCs and as such there was no discrimination between the Q-League and opposition party nazims. He said that all was done to ensure provision of clean drinking water to the residents of Data Town. He said that repair of vehicles and purchase of equipment was also necessary to ensure functioning of all streetlights. He said that the TMA would remove the objections and fulfil requirements according to the guidelines of the LG & CD Department.
