Pak-Afghan joint mechanism against extremism proposed

LAHORE - The Solidarity Party of Afghanistan leaders have proposed that Islamabad and Kabul should devise a joint mechanism to counter the extremists on both sides of the Durand Line.
The SPA leaders including its central spokesperson, Selay Ghaffar and senior member Hafiz Rasikh made this proposal while addressing a news conference at the Press Club here Wednesday, which was arranged by Awami Workers’ Party. AWP secretary general Farooq Tariq and labour secretary, Nazli Javed were also present.
Selay said that the SPA has rejected the recent presidential polls in Afghanistan as the holding of transparent elections was not possible in an occupied country. He alleged the incumbent Afghan government for serving the US interests instead of its people.
The SPA leader said that extremism could only be uprooted through joint strategy involving state interventions as well as active social reforms, as neither military operations nor peace dialogue alone could resolve the issue.
Selay proposed that improvement in education sector, enhancing economic opportunities, discouraging militancy from school-level and most importantly, empowering women are the reforms needed to be made immediately.
Earlier, the leaders adopted a joint declaration demanding a tribunal to be constituted for a fair trial of war criminals for their atrocities against women and political opponents in Afghanistan. The declaration also pledged for joint efforts of both parties to expose extremist groups’ atrocities at every platform.
