PSB decides to set up training camps

LAHORE - The Pakistan Sports Board officials and secretaries of the sports federations on the second day running discussed the deteriorating situation of sports in the country and laid out a plan of training of the players for participation in different international events. They decided to start the camp trainings from January 25. Director General PSB Syed Amir Hamza Gilani chaired the meeting. The participants discussed training plans for effective preparation and participation in the forthcoming 11th South Asian Games scheduled at Dhaka, Bangladesh during November-December 2009, 1st Asian Martial Arts Games at Bangkok, Thailand from April 25 to May 3 and 1st Asian Youth Games at Singapore from June 29 to July 7. The participant discussed the selection criteria for the camp trainees, coaches, venues and dates of establishment of the national camps. It was decided that the training camps of these games will coincide. The camps will commence on 25th January, 2009 at Pakistan Sports Complex, Islamabad and PSB Coaching Centres located at provincial capitals in athletics (men & women), judo (men & women), karate (men & women), kabaddi (men), wushu (men & women), table tennis (men & women), taekwondo (men & women) and weightlifting (men). It was also decided that the federations should submit the feedback to PSB before January 20. After analysing the proposals the PSB will allow the federations to establish the training camps on due date. The proposals of handball, squash and boxing will be considered later on with regard to the establishment of training camps for 11th South Asian Games. It is added that the PSB has allocated over Rs 40 million during the current financial year for the purpose. The PSB will release Rs 28.5 million and Rs 17 million in the shape of annual and special grants respectively to the National Sports Federations. The action plans submitted by the national sports federations for effective participation in other mega events will be finalised by PSB in consultation with POA for submission to the Ministry of Sports for approval and allocation of funds.The Director General apprised the house that 15 games prioritized by the government will be monitored and if their performances are not found satisfactory they will be replaced by other sports. Syed Pir Aftab Hussain Shah Jilani, Federal Minister for Sports has directed the PSB that monitoring system of the federation should be improved and government's grants-in-aid will be provided based on their performances and achievements. Besides, Abdul Khaliq Khan, Secretary General, Pakistan Olympic Association, the Honorary secretaries of athletics, judo, kabaddi, karate, table tennis, taekwondo, wushu and weightlifting, Muhammad Yousaf, Acting Director (Training), Muhammad Azam Dar, Assistant Director (Training) and Mahmood Aslam Dar, Publication Officer of PSB attended the meeting.
