Pakistan keeping Talha as stand by for Shoaib

LAHORE - The Pakistan selectors are likely to include Mohammad Talha in case Shoaib Akhtar is ruled out for the Champions Trophy due to fitness problems, it was learned here Wednesday. "His (Talha's) name has been kept as a stand-by," a Pakistan Cricket Board source said. "The selectors are still unaware about Shoaib's fitness and therefore this decision has been taken." The 20-year-old Talha is a right-arm medium-pace bowler playing for Faisalabad. He has captured 18 wickets in the eight first-class matches he has played so far. Shoaib's fitness and dope tests, along with the others, will be done at the training camp to be held from July 22 at Abottabad, the principal city in the North-West Frontier Province of Pakistan. His inclusion in the Champions Trophy provisional side will also be subject to the Pakistan Cricket Board's Governing Body meeting, it is learned here. The pace bowler has commenced light training practice after paying a visit to Islamabad recently. Captain Shoaib Malik was not present during the selection of 30 probables. Team coach Geoff Lawson was not present too but he had been sounded about the composition of the team later before it was being announced. "Inputs for team selection were taken from National Cricket Academy director Mudassar Nazar," the source added.
