Bar opposes reappointment of PCO judges

LAHORE - The Lahore High Court Bar Association through a unanimous resolution has strongly opposed an idea to pick some of the removed PCO judges for their fresh appointment in the Lahore High Court, saying it would negate their struggle for independent judiciary. The Bar members noted with deep concern that speculative list of new judges contained several persons who were recommended by the Dogar Courts, the resolution said. The Bar also resolved that irrespective of their excellent professional skills, it was an undeniable fact that they have lost respect in the eyes of Bar members and public. They succumbed to the temptations extended by illegal holders of the highest offices in the high court and the Supreme Court that had rendered their credentials dubious and unacceptable, the house meeting presided over by President Nasira Iqbal remarked. It creates an impression that the Bar efforts to usher in new era of independent judiciary have come to naught and spirit of the lawyers movement would appear to be frustrated, she added. Nasira said they had lost the respect of Bar members. How they can dispense justice to the citizens when they could not do justice to themselves and their profession? She questioned. Reading out the resolution she said, we are sanguine there are many persons who would meet the stringent criteria for appointment of judges, who did not yielded to any temptation during the dark period of unconstitutional judiciary initiated by Musharraf. The LHCBA requested the top brass of judiciary to take representatives of the bar into confidence while making appointments of judges. The nominees for elevation should be the persons of known integrity who command the respect of lawyers and the public. We are beginning the era of the rebirth of a strong and impartial judiciary. All those persons who bear stigma of previous Dogars era should be excluded from any proposal for fresh appointments of free and fair judiciary. Proposed Canal Road widening project
