LAHORE - Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed of the Lahore High Court on Wednesday issued contempt notice to the DCO Lahore for not appearing before the court in a contempt of court petition. The petition was filed by one Muhammad Afzal stating that the high court in a previous writ petition had directed the DCO Lahore to decide the grievance of the petitioner within fortnight. The petitioner said despite the lapse of more than two months, the DCO did not resolve the issue of his land mutation matter which amounts to contempt of court. Taking up the contempt petition, the judge issued notices to DCO twice but neither the DCO nor any his representative appeared on his behalf. On Wednesday, the judge issued show cause notice to the DCO saying as to why proceedings under contempt of court should not be initiated against him and summoned him in person for June 24. Convict released on parole Chief Justice Lahore High Court Khawaja Muhammad Sharif has directed the home secretary Punjab to decide representations of prisoners eligible for release on parole in the light of Parole and Probation Act. The CJ issued this direction while releasing a convict Muhammad Nawaz on parole after the home department gave positive report about the character of the inmate. Muhammad Nawaz presently imprisoned at Camp Jail, Lahore, had sought his release on parole pleading that he has been teaching in jail during his incarceration and the jail authorities also prepared character report in his favour. He said in light of the new Judicial Policy he deserved to be released on parole. He was awarded 25 years in jail in a case of double murder and has undergone 18 years imprisonment. He said he had filed a representation before the home secretary but the same was dismissed without giving any objection. The chief justice also directed the home secretary to mention a valid reason while dismissing representation of any prisoner. Additional Advocate General Hanif Khatana present in the court informed that according to relevant law in case of life imprisonment the convict can be released on parole after 10 years while after undergoing half of his conviction in other cases. The CJ further directed the home secretary to compile a report about such prisoners and decide their representations on merit.
