Varsities observe 'blackday' for non-provision of funds

LAHORE - Public Sector universities across the country on Friday observed black-day and staged demonstration to protest against the non-provision of sufficient funds for the on-going academic, research and infrastructural projects. The protest was observed on an appeal of President Federation of All Pakistan Academic Staff Association (FPASA) Prof Dr Mehar Muhammad Saeed Akhtar. Disclosing this on Friday, the General Secretary PU Academic Staff Association Prof Javed Samee said that the Association members of the varsity would also observe black-day by wearing black gowns, black badges and ribbons. He said it was deeply regrettable that promotion of education had never been on top priority of our rulers and govts, who as a fashion, never tire of claiming that they would spread literacy and education at the doorstep of every school going child in the country. He said the ruling classes should realize that the only way to enable the country to achieve an honorable and dignified place in the comity of nations was to allocate at least four percent of GDP for education sector. He demanded of the govt to ensure the provision of required funds to all the public sector universities so that educational and research projects could be completed. without any further loss of time. He said the PU scholars and teachers community would come out to make black-day a success on September 22 next and to register their protest against the heavy cut in the funds of public sector universities.
