LAHORE The three days 26th Governors Cup Golf Tournament commenced at the par-72, Lahore Gymkhana Golf Course and at the end of the first round, those who demonstrated total excellence are Mustafa Rafi Khan and Naveed Sharif. Both these competitors are from Lahore Gymkhana. Mustafa Rafi Khan, playing at 11 handicap, was straight and long off the tee on all par 4s and par 5s and followed up by good drives with crisp and accurate fairway shots; also notable was his putting on the greens. Mustafa completed the inward half in a score of 36 and the outward half in 40 and after allowing him, the handicap advantage, he had a score of net 65. During the round Mustafa had 12 pars, a birdie on the 9th hole and lost strokes on holes 4, 8, 10, 11 and 12. Naveed Sharif also displayed a decent game during the 18 holes, except his blemishes on holes 14 and 15 where he had double bogies. He had nine pars and two birdies. Others, who played well, are Amir Farooq (Rawalpindi) net 66, Jabran Janjua (Rawalpindi) net 68 and Nasir Irshad (Gym) net 69. Some more with decent scores are Nadeem Abbas net 70, Shahid A Khan net 70, Kamran Ashraf net 71, Irfan Nasir net 71, Kamran Musaher, Amir Rafiq Bhatti, Mian Tariq, AVM Zakaullah, Hammayun Mian and Hassan Asif all at net 72. A total of 140 amateur golfers played yesterday but a cut was made and only 80 will play on the second day. Ladies and seniors will tee off today.
